If postage and handling costs are not clearly stated by the seller, clarify this before bidding on the item. A vague statement like "buyer adds postage and handling to winning bid" could mean a $10.00 charge to mail a $5.00 record.

Include a copy of the seller's e-mail with your payment. This will simplify the task for high-volume sellers (who typically receive multiple auction payments) so that they can process your payment faster.
If you are paying your seller by check, write the item number and description on the check. This helps the seller avoid confusion, and allows him/her to process your payment faster.
Respond as promptly as possible to the seller's e-mail. If you just send out the payment without contacting them first, you run the risk of getting negative feedback since the seller will assume that you are a non-paying bidder.
Remember: If you want an item, you can always wait to the last minute to place a bid.
Clarify the condition of the item you are interested in if it is not indicated in the description. Caveat Emptor. (Ask your seller to provide you with the option of insuring the item if you have any particular concerns about its condition.)
Use an escrow service for high value items. Make sure you negotiate on how you and the seller will pay for this before you bid.
Summer is the slow time for Internet auctions. This is a great time for bidders to rake in the bargains.
Consider using a credit card to make your auction purchases. In addition to the added convenience, consult your credit card company for any fraud protection services and coverage they may offer.
Try searching for the item you desire with a few misspellings. A mistake on the seller's part could "spell" significant savings for you.
Look for auctions that are closing off-peak. The peak hours of activity are weekend evenings around 5-6 PM Pacific Standard Time. To maximize the success of your bid, shoot for off-peak time frames to place your bid, in order to minimize your competition for a given item.
If you can't find it, add it to the public WishList. Sellers browse the WishList to see what's in demand, so make sure your wanted item is on there for their viewing and eventual fulfillment.
